I’ve been acting since I was nine, and over the years I’ve had to take a lot of feedback. Because of this, I’ve had to learn the difference between feedback and criticism. I have to constantly remind myself not to take things personally. The feedback I’m giving through directors and choreographers is not personal (or at least it shouldn’t be.)
However I’ve also learned as a director/choreographer I need to take feedback as well. Just because I’m in a leadership position doesn’t mean I’ve got everything right. When something doesn’t feel comfortable to an actor, I need to be someone they can bring that too and they’ll know I will take care of it.
I think this applies in so many areas of life. Feedback should be always welcome. If we are looking to better ourselves, we should seek feedback.
